The photograph above shows Apple founder Steve Jobs sitting in his living room, which is noticeably free of clutter. Taken by Diana Walker in 1982, the image captures Jobs’ reputation as a minimalist, with simplicity being a guiding principle in his life and work. The question “what is the essence of what I try to do” reflects this ethos of distilling complex ideas down to their core components, helping to ensure that design solutions remain focused on what truly matters by continually asking this question: “what is the essence of what I try to do?”

To expand on the idea of simplicity and minimalism in design, Steve Jobs’ approach to asking the question “what is the essence of what I try to do” was rooted in the idea of distilling complex ideas down to their most basic and essential components. This approach allows for a clearer understanding of the purpose and function of a product and enables the designer to focus on what is truly important.

In the case of Apple’s iOS 7, the decision to remove excess noise and clutter from the interface was based on this idea of distilling down to the essential elements. By simplifying the design, the user is able to focus on the core functionality and purpose of the device, rather than being distracted by unnecessary visual elements.

However, achieving simplicity is not easy. It requires a deep understanding of the product and its users, as well as a willingness to continually ask questions and iterate on design solutions. It is a delicate balance between providing enough information and functionality to the user while also removing anything that is not essential.

“When you remove the clutter, you’re standing face to face with what makes great design great. And we’ve come to only expect the best when it’s from Apple. While I’m surprised to see Apple ship something that was not fully finished, hopefully, many of these issues will be addressed as iOS 7 matures.”
